Making meals for the elderly

Today I made a delicious casserole for an elderly couple from our church. This couple have been very active in our church most of their life and it is hard for them to be waited on now. The man is over 90 and his wife is nearly 90 but they are trying to stay in their own home and take care of eachother yet. This is getting more difficult as they deal with ill health etc.

It is difficult for them and also for us to see their health fade. So many changes just in the last year. I sure can learn alot from them as I see the love and devotion they have for eachother as they live out life.

1) Just finish your business lunch and realize you don't have gum or mints? Take a slice of cucumber and press it to the roof of your mouth with your tongue for 30 seconds to eliminate bad breath; the phytochemcials will kill the bacteria in your mouth responsible for causing bad breath. ( Just a thought - who carries a cucumber along to a business lunch, eh?) Anyway, that is what the book says.....

2) Looking for a 'green' way to clean your faucets, sinks or stainless steel? Take a slice of cucumber and rub it on the surfaces you wat to clean, not only will it remove years of tarnish and bring back the shine, but it won't leave streaks and won't harm your fingers or fingernails while you clean.

That's all folks...........................

Back with more wonders of VINEGAR
1) Remove perspiration odor and stains from clothing, as well as those left by deordorants, by spraying full strength vinegar on underarm and collar areas before tossing them into the washing machine.

2) Cut excess suds when doing hand laundry with a little vinegar added to the last rinse. Follow this with another plain rinse.

3) Make nylon hose look smoother and last longer by adding just a tablespoon of vinegar to the rinse water.

4) Use vinegar to the rinse water when washing plastic table clothes to cut down on static cling.

Thought for Tuesday

Love one another
and help those in need,
Regardless of color,
race, church, or creed.
Today concentrate on helping others and grasp each opportunity
to offer encouragement and assistance.
How important this is when thinking of the destruction in Haiti.

Hearts are Heavy

We hear the news of the earthquake in Haiti and our hearts are saddened. Such destruction in an area that was so poor already. Be much in prayer for the Haitians as they face their uncertain future. Remember to thank God for all the comforts we enjoy.

More uses for vinegar

1) Scrub a paste of vinegar and baking soda on ring-around-the-collar before shirts go into the washing machine.

2) Remove grass stains with a solution of water, white vinegar and liquid soap.

3) Dab vinegar on mustard stains before washing.

4) Attack spaghetti, barbacue or ketchup stains first with a vinegar and water solution.

5) Use vinegar in the rinse water for table linens and bed linens to keep them from yellowing in storage.

And may you feel His presence near

Time to De-clutter

Some of my bloging friends are talking about de-cluttering their closets, etc. I've been doing some of that myself. I have been saving cards (anniversary, birthday, sympathy, Mother's and Father's day, etc. for many years. Last week one day I got those out, looked thru them and then threw most of them out. I kept the Mother and Father's day cards and the very special ones I got from my grandchildren. I had a good time reading them but I know I can't keep everything. It is time to delete some of the clutter. It is also time to delete some of the clutter from my mind - not an easy job to do, but a very important one, none the else.

Have a great and safe week-end!

The amazing cucumber

Note: This info was in The New York Times several weeks ago as part of their "Spotlight on the Home" series that highlighted creative ways to solve common problems.

1) Cucumbers contain most of the vitamins you need every day, just one cucumber contains Vitamin B1, Vitamin B2, Vitamin B3, Vitamin B5, Vitamin B6, Folic Acid, Vitamin C, Calcuim, Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Potassium and Zinc.

2) Feeling tired in the afternoon; put down the caffeinated soda and pick up a cucumber. Cucumbers are a good source of B Vitamins and Carbohydrates that can provide that quick pick-me-up that can last for hours.

3) Looking to fight off that afternoon or evening snacking binge? Cucumbers have been used for centuries and often used by European trappers, traders for quick meals to thwart off starvation.

4) Stressed out and don't have time or money for the spa? Cut up an entire cucumber and place it in a boiling pot of water, the chemicals and nutrients from the cucumber with react with the boiling water and be released in the steam, creating a soothing, relaxing aroma that has been shown to reduce stress.

A thought for Wednesday

God put each new day into our hands
to see what we will do with it.
My help comes from the Lord,
who made heaven and earth,
He......will neither slumber and sleep.
Psalm 121: 2,4

A new look!

How do you like my new look? A very special gal came over and helped me set-up my blog with a new look. (Actually she did it - I watched) Thank you Mari, you are special. Hopefully I will be able to do it myself in the spring. Stay safe, stay warm ---it's cold outside.

More uses for vinegar

1) Check the growth of mold in your humidifier by rinsing it out thoroughly, then adding 1/2 cup vinegar when refilling it with water.

2) Add about 1/4 cup of vinegar to the last rinse in just about any kind of laundry. The acid in vinegar is too mild to harm fabrics, yet strong enought to dissolve the alkalies in soaps and detergents. Beside removing soap, vinegar prevents yellowing, acts as a fabric softener and static cling reducer and attacks mold and mildew.

3) Add 1/2 cup of vinegar to prevent lint clinging to clothes.

4) Use vinegar in your final rinse for black washables. It removes soap residue that makes black clothes look dull.

5) Vinegar is good for the washing machine itself. Periodically run the machine with only a cup of vinegar in it--nothing else added to the wash cycle. Hoses will be cleaned and soap scum dissolved.
